Paris – Ibrahima Konate was not brought by the French national team despite being an important pillar of Liverpool. Coach Didier Deschamps has his reasons.
Deschamps released a list of players who will be brought to the UEFA Nations League next month. There is no name Ibrahima Konate.
The Liverpool defender was unable to compete with the ranks of names such as William Saliba and Jules Kunde. In fact, Konate is performing well with the Reds.
Konate performed beautifully when Liverpool beat Chelsea in the FA Cup final. When the Reds beat Southampton’s fierce resistance in the Premier League, the 22-year-old defender also appeared tough at the back.
Deschamps, coach of France, had his own reasons why Konate was not called up. The reason is tactics.
Deschamps used to use a 3-5-2 formation, so there was no place for Konate, who played in a back four for Liverpool. That was the cause.
“Yes, I followed Konate. He was in a team that competed in the Champions League final and won the English League title. But since at Liverpool, he has played in a defensive four-back formation. Meanwhile, there is competition here,” said Deschamps, quoted by Reuters. Daily Mail.
“I last brought William Salia and he always played in a back three. It’s very competitive and that’s good. It allows senior players to be uncomfortable,” he said.
This season, Ibrahima Konate has appeared 27 times with Liverpool, contributing to make three defenders. The player, who was bought from RB Leipzig, helped Jurgen Klopp win the Premier League Cup and FA Cup, and still has the chance to win the Champions League and Premier League.
The French national team is waiting for two UEFA Nations League matches next month. First against Denmark [4/7/2022], then against Croatia three days later.
